
Lumberjax sign six players for 2006 season

Portland LumberJax General Manager and Head Coach Derek Keenan announced today that the expansion team has signed D Brodie Merrill, F Ryan Powell, G Nick Schroeder, F Mike Hominuck, F Ryan Sharp, and D Luck Forget to contracts. The six signings bring two big names to the Jax, 1st overall draft pick Brodie Merrill and indoor and field lacrosse superstar Ryan Powell.
Merrill, 24 (11/05/81), first overall draft pick this year signed a two-year contract with the Jax after being captain of Georgetown University's lacrosse team. One of only five Tewaaraton Trophy Finalists and a 2004 USILA First Team All-American selection and named First Team All-ECAC and finished second in the conference and tied for fifth in the nation for groundballs per game (6.14). The defenseman is originally from Orangeville, ON and weighs in at 6'4'' 205lb and will be a fan favorite with his aggressive, versatile game.
Powell, 27 (2/23/78), the forward signed a two-year contract with the Jax. The Denver native played with the Anaheim Storm last year and has been in the NLL for four seasons with an incredible career points record of 108 (45 goals, 63 assists). He also is known on the field lacrosse circuit playing currently with the MLL Rochester Rattlers, and was one the top ten players for assists (15) last year.
Schroeder, 26 (3/22/79), the goalie has played with the Philadelphia Wings for the past four season and boasted a 66.67% save percentage last season. At 6'0'' 220lb, the Vancouver, BC native is a menacing goalkeeper to opponents.
Hominuck, 24, (5/04/81), recorded 12 points (5 goals, 7 assists) and 36 loose balls last season with the Buffalo Bandits. At 5'9'' 170lb, the forward is originally from St. Catherines, ON and has been in the league for two years.
Sharp, 22 (1/21/83), the transition player started his NLL career last year at Calgary and was selected 15th overall in the 2004 NLL Entry Draft. The Peterborough, ON native appeared in two games last season, and contributed one goal.
Forget, 24 (5/15/81), the 6'1'' 195lb defensemen played his rookie season with the Toronto Rock last year. Forget is originally from Woodstock, ON and had 7 points (7 assists) with the Rock.
The six newest Jax are great assets to the expansion team and will highlight their talents in the upcoming season getting under way in the Rose Garden on Saturday, January 21 at 7:30p against the Colorado Mammoth.

The Portland LumberJax (www.PortlandJax.com) were founded on May 11, 2005 as an expansion franchise in the National Lacrosse League, which features the best lacrosse players in the world.
