Lumberjacks Sign Columbus State Star

Bangor, ME- The Bangor Lumberjacks, a proud member of the Northeast League, announced today that they have signed OF/1B Taylor Groce (pronounced "gross") to a contract. To make room on the roster for Groce, the Lumberjacks released OF Stephen King.

Groce was a star at Columbus (GA) State University over his three-year career. This past season, the 6-2, 185 pound outfielder, hit .361 with 8 home runs and 58 RBI's, leading the team in batting average and RBI's. He also led the Cougars in on-base percentage (.449), slugging percentage (.574), total bases (105), and walks (31).

Last season, Groce hit .332 with 8 home runs and 57 RBI's and 50 runs scored in leading the Cougars to the NCAA Division II National Championship, the first in school history. Taylor hit three home runs in the tournament, including two in the National Championship Game.

"Kash has received great reports on Taylor. He will be inserted directly in the lineup and we hope he will spark us offensively," stated Lumberjacks General Manager Curt Jacey.

King had hit just .145 with four RBI's in 27 games for the Lumberjacks this season.

The Lumberjacks return home to Mahaney Diamond on Friday, June 27 to take on the Quebec Capitales at 7:15 PM. It is Mini-bat night so all season ticket, ten pack and five pack ticket holders will receive a free Lumberjacks mini-bat. There will also be a mini-bat handed out to the first few hundred fans through the front gate, which opens at 6 PM.
