Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Dalton Pompey homered twice, Emilio Guerrero finished a triple short of the cycle and Jordan Leyland drove in six runs as the Lansing Lugnuts (25-39, 57-76) used a season-high run total to trounce the Dayton Dragons (35-29, 63-70), 18-6, on Monday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
Pompey hit solo home runs in the first and third innings to give the Lugs a lead and then Lansing blew the game open with seven runs in the fourth inning against Dayton starter Amir Garrett (Loss, 1-3).
Jason Leblebijian started the scoring with an RBI single and was followed by Guerrero's two-run double. Christian Lopes' two-run single then put Lansing up 7-1. With the bases loaded, Leyland capped the seven-run frame with a two-run single of his own.
Garrett lasted just 3 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs - all earned - on 10 Lansing hits. The lefty walked three and struck out just two in the loss.
Later in the game, Guerrero added a two-run homer in the fifth before Lansing tacked on a pair in the sixth, taking a 13-4 lead at the time.
Leyland then came to bat with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, slugging an opposite-field homer to right-center, giving Lansing their third grand slam of the season and 18 total runs, surpassing 14 for the most runs scored by the Lugs all season.
Pompey reached base five times in total and scored all five times, a season-high for the Lugs in 2013. Guerrero drove in four runs and also scored a pair, while Lopes and Leblebijian each also drove in two runs.
Lansing starter Eric Brown (Win, 2-3) earned an easy win thanks to all the run-support. The 24-year old Canadian tossed six innings, allowing three runs - two earned - on just three total hits. Brown walked one and struck out one.
Following on off-day on Tuesday, the Lugnuts will head off to Eastlake, Ohio for a three-game series against the Lake County Captains. Lansing will open the series with Kendall Graveman (0-3, 4.25) on the mound.
