Lubbock Renegades News Release
LUBBOCK, TX: May 4, 2007 - The inaugural Lubbock Renegades of the arenafootball2 completed more transactions this week, as they seek their second consecutive win Saturday night against the Amarillo Dusters. Earlier in the week, the Renegades placed Carlos Ousley, Doug Barnett and Carl Walker on re-assignment, completed a trade with the Everett Hawks for defensive back Charles Ealy, assigned defensive lineman Chris Hudler to the roster, placed Orlando Medlock on recallable re-assignment and moved James McCoy to the injured reserve list. Today, the Renegades placed kicker Keith Toogood on re-assignment and they have been assigned kicker Chris Balseiro.
Balseiro joins the Renegades after beginning the season with the Laredo Lobos. The Miami, Florida native played in one game with the Lobos and was unsuccessful on a pair of field goal attempts over 50 yards and was 5 of 7 on PATs. He is out of the University of Arkansas, where he made 28-of-40 field goal attempts in his Razorback career. Both his attempts (40) and his field goals made (28) rank eighth on the UA career charts. He led the Razorbacks in scoring for three-consecutive seasons. He was 25-of-30 (.833) on field goal attempts inside 40 yards in his career. He replaces Toogood, who was 13 of 22 on PATs this season (59%) and was unsuccessful on a league high eight field goal attempts.
Ealy also brings af2 experience this season to the Renegades after beginning the season leading the Everett Hawks defense with 15.5 tackles. He is in his second season in the af2 after spending his rookie campaign last season with the Louisville Fire. Ealy finished sixth in tackles for the Fire with 29 (27 solo), along with 8 pass breakups and an interception in 14 games. After playing at both Palisades Charter and Gardena High School in the Los Angeles area, Ealy was a top recruit by Fresno State University (9th rated receiver out West by PrepStar). He redshirted in 2001 and then transferred to Compton Community College, where he converted to a defensive back. The 5'11" 200-pound defensive back then transferred to UNLV and played under John Robinson. Ealy produced 31 tackles in 2004, ranking second among UNLV cornerbacks. The 23 year-old wanted to transfer to Div. II Central Oklahoma, but was academically ruled ineligible, so he decided to enter the 2005 NFL supplemental draft. Ealy had some good workouts and entertained some NFL opportunities.
Hudler is a familiar name to Red Raiders fans after closing out a college tenure last season with Texas Tech University. As a senior season last season, the 6'2" 300-pound lineman produced 41 tackles (20 solo), six tackles for a loss and three sacks. The numbers helped earn him All-Big 12 First Team (Houston Chronicle), All-Big 12 Second Team (San Antonio Express-News) and All-Big 12 Honorable Mention (Coaches) accolades. Hudler was an Insiders.com Texas Super Team selection after being part of Mesquite High School's state championship team prior to coming to Tech.
