Charleston Lowgators News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (March 12, 2003) â The North Charleston Lowgators and ABC News 4 participated at Charleston's Promise at Rivers Middle School on Wednesday evening. Spearheaded by General Colin Powell, Charleston's Promise is the local version of America's Promise, a grass roots organization that is dedicated to mobilizing the nation's groups and organizations as well as businesses to build and strengthen the character and competence of America's young people.
The Lowgators signed autographs and teamed up with the Rivers Middle School All-Stars and several ABC News 4 employees in a basketball scrimmage. Lowgators assistant coach Kelvin Upshaw was on fire, knocking down several three-pointers while playing fierce defense.
Lake Palmetto Townhomes, the sole provider of Lowgator housing, donated 100 tickets to the school for Friday night's home game against the Roanoke Dazzle.
The five promises Charleston's Promise is making to every child include:
-An ongoing relationship with a caring adult-parent, mentor, tutor or coach.
-A safe place to be with structured activities during non-school hours.
-A healthy start
-A marketable skill through effective education.
-And, an opportunity to give back through community service.
Tickets for Friday night's 7 p.m.game are only $7.50 for children and seniors, $10 for students and the military, and $13 for adults. Good seats are still available at the Coliseum box office or local Ticketmaster Outlets. Call (843) 460-1000 for more information.
