Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
LOWELL, MA --- The Lowell Spinners scored at least one run in each of the first four innings and added five runs in the sixth to build an 11-run lead and held on for a 13-9 New York-Penn League victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters Friday night at LeLecheur Park.
The Spinners, who scored at least one run in each of their last six innings at bat in a 10-7 win on Thursday, picked up where they left off on Friday with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning off Vermont starter Jesus Zambrano. Lowell added an unearned run in the second, a Bobby Dalbec solo homer in the third and two more runs in the fourth for an 8-0 lead.
Vermont got two runs back in the sixth on a JaVon Shelby two-run single, but the Spinners scored five more runs on four hits, four walks and a hit batter in the sixth off reliever Branden Kelliher for a 13-2 lead. It marked the fourth time in the last 17 games that Lake Monster pitchers have allowed 13 runs in a game, while Vermont has now allowed 50 runs during its current five-game losing streak (seven or more runs in all five games).
The Lake Monsters made the final score respectable with two runs in the seventh, three in the eighth and two more in the ninth. Shelby had a two-run double in the seventh for a four-RBI night, while James Terrell an RBI double and Nate Mondou a two-run single in the eighth. Tyler Ramirez went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI, including a double in the eighth and an RBI triple in the ninth.
Dalbec was 3-for-5 with two runs, a double, homer and four RBI for Lowell (28-19), while Ryan Scott 3-for-5 with three RBI and Victor Acosta 3-for-4 with two RBI. Starter Dakota Smith (1-1) allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts over the first 5 2/3 innings to earn the win for the Spinners.
Mondou was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI to raise his batting average to .367, second-best to Lowell's Tyler Hill (.376) in the New York-Penn League. Mondou also extended his team record consecutive on-base streak to 27 straight games, tied for longest in the NYPL this season with Blake Perkins of Auburn (snapped July 31st). Reliever Tyler Painton gave up just two hits over 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
Vermont (19-28) has lost 11 of its last 13 games overall since being 17-17 on July 22nd, while losing six straight on the road and 10 of its last 11 away games. The Lake Monsters return home to historic Centennial Field to begin a three-game series against the State College Spikes on Saturday. The first 500 fans will receive a free Lake Monsters replica road jersey and there will be a post-game fireworks show following the 6:05 pm game.
