Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
FISHKILL, NY - A stellar pitching performance from starter Noel Rodriguez and a two-RBI night from second baseman Jon Popadics propelled the Renegades to a 4-2 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones Friday night at Dutchess Stadium. The win evened the season series between the Cyclones and Renegades at six wins apiece.
After Brooklyn starter, and New York Mets 1st round draft pick, Justin Dunn pitched three scoreless innings, the Renegades got to the Brooklyn bullpen to take the lead in the fourth. With one out, Cyclones reliever Adam Atkins walked back-to-back hitters to put runners at first and second. Second baseman Jon Popadics then stepped to the plate for Hudson Valley and singled to center to bring in a run and give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.
Hudson Valley then took control of the game with a three-run fifth. Centerfielder Jake Fraley led off the inning with a triple then scored on a double from rightfielder Garrett Whitley. After an out, a wild pitch sent Whitley to third. With one out, Haley grounded a ball to shortstop, which was booted by Colby Woodmansee allowing Whitley to score and giving Haley an RBI. After Haley was thrown out trying to steal for out number two, first baseman Nate Lowe laced a double into the leftfield. Popadics followed that with another RBI single to single to score Lowe and give the Renegades a 4-0 lead.
Brooklyn tried to make a game of it late off the Renegades bullpen. In the eighth, rightfielder Gene Cone led off the inning with a walk then moved to third on a double by designated hitter Brandon Brosher. Following a strikeout, catcher Ali Sanchez grounded to third to score Cone and make the score 4-1.
In the ninth, centerfielder Jacob Zanon started the inning with a double, then went to third on a wild pitch. Second baseman Michael Paez followed that with a grounder to short to score Zanon and pull the Cyclones to within 4-2.
With one out and no one on base after that, a fly ball pulled the Renegades to within one more out of ending the game. First baseman Pete Alonso doubled down the rightfield line for Brooklyn to bring the tying run to plate. However Cone would follow that with a strikeout to end the game.
Renegades starter Noel Rodriguez (2-1) was brilliant in picking up the win. The right-hander went six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out three while facing the minimum. The loss fell to reliever Adam Atkins of the Cyclones after he allowed a run on a hit while walking three in 0.2 innings of work. Brooklyn reliever Gabriel Feliz also allowed three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings to allow the Hudson Valley to take control of the game.
Despite allowing a run, Renegades closer Jose Alonzo got through the ninth to garner his third save of the season.
Hudson Valley had eight hits including a 2-5 performance from Fraley who tripled, singled, stole a base and scored a run. Popadics also went 2-4 with two RBI singles.
Brooklyn had only four hits including a 2-4 performance by Alonso who also doubled.
The Renegades welcome the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to Dutchess Stadium Friday to begin a three-game series. First-pitch is slated for 7:05. Right-hander Spencer Moran (2-1, 2.08 ERA) will take the mound for Hudson Valley against righty Aaron Civale (0-1, 0.95 ERA) of the Scrappers. The game will be followed by a fireworks show.
