Louisville City FC News Release
MONTREAL -- In their first trip outside of the States, Louisville City FC (5-1-5, 20 points) got a pair of first half goals, and a fifth clean sheet in a 2-0 win over FC Montreal (1-8-1, 4 points).
Going into the match, Louisville City head coach, James O'Connor, had the team working on crosses and corners all week. He would remind his players they have scored just once in 83 corner kicks, and their work this week would pay off. In the 16th minute, Louisville took their first corner kick of the match, and McCabe put an out swinger into the box where Tarek Morad planted a header into the back of the net to give City the early 1-0 lead.
Twelve minutes later, Matt Fondy would have his sixth goal of the season gift wrapped for him. Montreal's back-line got dangerously careless, sending the ball right to an unmarked Fondy. The forward took full advantage of the home team's blunder, and calmly slotted it past the outstretched hands of the keeper.
Louisville would continue to control the tempo for the rest of the first half, and seemed satisfied to take a 2-0 lead to the locker room.
In the second stanza, Louisville City FC played under familiar conditions as rain poured down on the pitch. The visitors created chances early, but seemed content to control possession with their two goal lead. FC Montreal's Zakaria Messoudi came close to cutting the Louisville lead in half, when his shot in the 66th minute banged off of the post. It was the second time in the match that the home team had hit the frame, but it was as close as they would get to finding the score sheet. City collected their first road shutout, and first win away from Slugger in USL play.
Louisville City FC will take on the undefeated Rochester Rhinos next. The match is scheduled for Saturday at 7:05 in Rochester, New York. Following the US Open Cup match with the Chicago Fire next Tuesday, City returns home for another USL tilt with the New York Red Bulls II.
