Johnson City Doughboys News Release
The Doughboys begin the second half of the season with seventh consecutive loss
Joe Vetrano slammed two doubles and drove in two runs, but it wasn't enough as Johnson City fell to Princeton, 7-2, on the road on Thursday night.
The loss is Johnson City's seventh in a row.
After falling behind 2-0, the Doughboys had Vetrano (Boston College) come up to the plate with two runners on and two outs in the top of the sixth. The left-handed slugger proceeded to rope his second double of the night to the left-center gap to score both Steven Ondina (FIU) and Alan Espinal (Vanderbilt).
Having tied the game 2-2, the Doughboys (8-18-1) sent the game to the bottom of the sixth inning, where the WhistlePigs then asserted control of the game.
After a leadoff single, Princeton (16-11) got back to back doubles and then a two-run home run from Jack Rubenstein to erupt for four runs with nobody out in the bottom of the sixth. The home side added to their advantage with one more run in the eighth inning to seal the win.
Trevor Hinkel (Pepperdine) started the game and threw four effective innings for Johnson City, picking up six strikeouts along the way.
Later, Donye Evans (Vanderbilt) impressed in his Johnson City debut, tossing 1 2/3 innings in relief with only one hit allowed. Another Commodore making his team debut, catcher Alan Espinal, drew two walks and scored a run.
Johnson City will look to split the series when they return to Princeton to face the WhistlePigs on Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
