Los Angeles defeats Kansas City 51-48

June 14, 2008 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Kansas City Brigade News Release

Los Angeles, CA - Peter Martinez's 31 yard field goal attempt sailed wide left as the clock expired to give the Los Angeles Avengers (5-10) a 51-48 win over the Kansas City Brigade (3-12). 11,282 fans held their collective breath at Staples Center as Martinez tried to make his third field goal on the day. Timon Marshall's three yard rushing touchdown proved to be the winning score with 44 seconds left to play.

The Brigade offense came out with a purpose. Quincy Carter led the Brigade on five consecutive scoring drives as Kansas City led 31-20 at half. Carter would finish 21-34 for 223 yards and five total touchdowns (1 rushing). Carter did commit one turnover (interception) and was sacked in the end-zone for a safety. Charles Frederick led the way with 101 receiving yards on 10 catches. Mike Horacek caught a team high two touchdowns. Jerel Myers and Dawan Moss would each add one score.

Former Texas Tech quarterback Sonny Cumbie didn't make it look pretty but the Avenger offense was effective. Cumbie led the Avengers on eight scoring drives, none bigger then the last time LA had the ball. Cumbie executed a reverse perfectly to Timon Marshall for the final score of the game. Several Brigade defenders were facing the opposite direction trying to locate the football. Cumbie struggled with his control at times but finished the game 22-36 for 270 yards and four touchdown passes. The Avenger offense was very balanced in both running and passing. Marshall and LaShaun Ward each scored touchdowns on rushing and passing plays. Kevin Ingram, who was named Ironman of the game, contributed two touchdowns with 60 total yards.

The Brigade defense was very active in a hard fought game. Gillis Wilson recorded two sacks to go along with 5.5 total tackles. Denario Smalls had one interception and one fumble recovery against the LA offense. Unfortunately the Avenger defense made plays as well. Los Angeles sacked Quincy Carter three times and broke up four of his passes.

Kansas City will need some major help to return to the AFL playoffs for the second straight season with just one week to go.

Kansas City travels to Colorado to play the Crush on Saturday, June 21st. Los Angeles heads to Tampa Bay to meet up with the Storm in a Week 17 match-up.
