Dunedin Blue Jays News Release
CLEARWATER, FL - The Dunedin Blue Jays (2-0) spoiled the Clearwater Threshers' (0-2) home opener on Friday night with an 8-3 win. IF Christian Lopes carried the load with a leadoff home run to begin the game, a triple, four RBI, two runs scored and two walks.
Friday's game showed eerily similar characteristics to opening night on Thursday. The Jays relied on their bats coming alive in the later innings as well as a spectacular effort from the bullpen.
Lopes jumped on the first pitch of the game from Threshers' starter LHP Matt Imhof (L, 0-1) and sent it into the berm to give Dunedin a 1-0 lead. Clearwater came right back in the bottom of the first with an infield RBI-single from 1B Kyle Martin. Dunedin Starter RHP Tom Robson stranded the bases loaded in the first after giving up two singles and three walks. Robson lasted just the one inning, however, and the game was handed to the Jays' pen.
With Robson out of the game early, LHP Alonzo Gonzalez, RHP Brad Allen (W, 1-0), RHP Adonys Cardona, LHP Jose Fernandez and RHP Chris Rowley combined to allow a single run over their eight innings. In total, Jays' pitchers stranded 17 runners on the basepaths.
With the game tied at two in the sixth, the Jays broke the game open. A OF Derrick Loveless sacrifice fly to plate OF D.J. Davis gave Dunedin the lead. Two batters later, Lopes connected with his triple to make it a 5-2 game. In the eighth, Loveless, Lopes and IF Richard Urena each knocked in a run to put the game away.
Saturday is mascot night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:30 pm with LHP Ryan Borucki (0-0, 0.00) on the hill for Dunedin. Clearwater will send out RHP Ranfi Casimiro (0-0, 0.00).
