Team Honors Presented at Black Hawks Banquet

Waterloo, Iowa-Recognizing on-ice accomplishments and contributions to the organization, the Waterloo Black Hawks held their annual team awards banquet Sunday evening, just prior to the final week of the 2009-2010 regular season and the Clark Cup playoffs beyond.

Addressing those in attendance, Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley used three words to describe the year: adversity, toughness, and challenge.

"We've faced plenty of all," he said, "We've faced a ton of it on and off the rink, and the way [the team] handled it will prepare us for what's to come."

The Black Hawks players voted on a variety of honors for their teammates. The Most Valuable Player award was split between team captain Brock Montpetit and leading scorer J.T. Brown. Appearing in 54 games so far during his third season, Montpetit has 29 goals and 36 assists. Brown, a second-year forward, has played in all 58 games and ranks third in the USHL with 74 points.

Other awards conferred by the players included:

Rookie of the Year - defenseman Zach Palmquist

Most Improved Player - goaltender C.J. Motte

Hardest Worker - Jimmy Siers

Unsung Hero - Jimmy Siers

The organization's Community Service Award, presented to the player logging the most hours involved in projects benefitting the Cedar Valley, was presented to defenseman Dan Sova. Sova also won the Slumberland Furniture Fan's Choice Player of the Year Award, which raised over $1,800 for good causes in the community through fan contributions.

Members of the front office staff selected Montpetit as the Roth Jewelers Front Office Player of the Year for his assistance organizing a variety of team activities.

The Black Hawks Booster Club picked Derek Arnold for their Player of the Year award after observing his interactions with fans and teammates.

Finally, the franchise selected two individuals for the Karen Wente Distinguished Service Award. Ben Brown was recognized in absentia for his efforts to organize a renovation of the Black Hawks locker room. University of Northern Iowa professor Denny Irons was honored for his assistance with advanced game statistics.
