Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-For the third time this season, multiple Waterloo Black Hawks were recognized by the United States Hockey League as the top performers of the week at their positions.
Tyler Barnes contributed at least one point during each of three Waterloo games last week and earned the Reebok Offensive Player of the Week title. He notched a pair of goals in a 5-3 home loss to Sioux Falls Wednesday, then tallied two more in a 4-0 victory at Des Moines Friday. Barnes' point Saturday was an assist on Nick Ebert's game-winning goal against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in a 4-0 decision. With 66 points, Barnes is the Black Hawks' third-leading scorer and ranks eighth in the USHL.
Will Yanakeff made three starts in net and was rewarded as the USHL Goaltender of the Week. Bouncing back from the loss to Sioux Falls Wednesday, Yanakeff earned back-to-back shutouts. In all three appearances combined, Yanakeff turned away 74 of the 78 shots he faced. Since being acquired from the Sioux City Musketeers, the Jerome, Michigan native has a 5-4-0 record. He has earned the decision, win or loss, in nine of the last twelve Black Hawks games.
"The wins last weekend put us into the playoffs," said Waterloo Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "Tyler and Will delivered clutch performances when we had not been getting good results as a team. Tyler showed why he is one of the league's most talented offensive players, and Will helped us continue to find stability in net."
The league recognition was first for Barnes this season. He joins teammates Derek Arnold, J.T. Brown, and Brock Montpetit (twice) as a Reebok Offensive Player of the Week winner. Yanakeff was Goaltender of the Week in October as a member of the Sioux City Musketeers. C.J. Motte (three times) and Steve Racine have also earned the honor as Black Hawks this season. The Hawks also took multiple honors on November 30th, when Montpetit, Motte, and Dan Sova (CCM Defensive Player of the Week) swept the categories, and on November 9th, when Racine and defenseman Zach Palmquist enjoyed solid weeks.
The Black Hawks play their final regular season games on Friday and Saturday. A visit to Sioux City opens the weekend, followed by Waterloo's final home game at 7:05 Saturday against Team USA.
