Long Island Nets Down Clippers for Second Straight Win
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Long Island Nets (4-5), the NBA G League affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets, defeated the Agua Caliente Clippers (3-6) 101-94 tonight at HP Field House to earn their second straight win.
Long Island guard Jeremiah Martin led the way in the victory, finishing with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 shooting from the free-throw line to go with two rebounds, three assists and three steals in 32 minutes of play. He recorded his fourth-straight game of 20 or more points in the win.
Nets forward Nate Sestina recorded a season-high 17 points on 5-of-12 shooting from distance and added five rebounds and an assist in 21 minutes off the bench. Two-way forward Reggie Perry finished with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field with five rebounds and an assist in 29 minutes for the Nets.
Agua Caliente guard Tyrone Wallace recorded 20 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the field to go along with nine rebounds, two assists, three steals and a block in 36 minutes of action. Clippers guard/forward James Palmer Jr. added 17 points, two rebounds and five assists in 34 minutes of play.
The contest was low scoring to start, with Long Island holding a 10-6 lead after a free-throw from Perry at the midway point of the first quarter. The Clippers responded with a quick 8-2 spurt to take a 12-10 edge with 4:22 to go in the period. Back-and-forth play followed, with Agua Caliente forward Donte Grantham hitting a 3-pointer two seconds before the buzzer for a 25-23 Clippers lead after one.
Agua Caliente pushed its lead to eight points, 33-25, less than two minutes into the second and later extended its advantage to double digits with 5:09 left in the half, but the Nets fought back. Long Island mounted an 11-2 run that was capped by a triple from Sestina with 2:07 on the clock to bring them within two points and went on to trail just 57-55 at halftime.
Long Island caught fire to open the third, scoring 13 unanswered points over the first 4:08 of the frame. The Nets went on to outscore Agua Caliente 29-18 in the third for an 84-75 lead entering the final quarter of play.
The Nets went back ahead by double digits early in the fourth, but Agua Caliente kept fighting, cutting its deficit to five, 91-86, after a Wallace 3-pointer at the midway point of the quarter. A pair of free throws from Martin with 1:36 left in the game put the Nets ahead 101-90 and sealed the Nets' second straight victory by an ultimate final score of 101-94.
The Nets will host the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in their next game on Thursday, Feb. 25, at 3:30 p.m. ET at HP Field House, while the Clippers will also face the Fort Wayne Mad Ants next on Friday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. ET.
