Long Island erupts for an eight-run third to even series at one

(Central Islip, N.Y., September 8, 2009)- The Long Island Ducks defeated the Newark Bears 11-5 on Tuesday night before a past-capacity crowd of 6,187 at Citibank Park.   Newark and Long Island traded runs in the first inning. The Bears jumped out in front on a RBI double by Sandy Madera off Ducks' starter Troy Cate, while the Ducks quickly tied it at one with a two-out RBI single into right field by Freddie Thon.   The Ducks took their first lead in the bottom of the second inning as Ray Navarrete brought home two with a two-run double off Bears' starter Matt Smith. In the third, Long Island banged out an eight-spot to open up the contest. Rob Sandora, Juan Francia, Alex Prieto and Navarrete all chipped in with RBI singles. Estee Harris' two-run single and Matt Cavagnaro's two-run double highlighted the inning and gave the Flock an 11-1 lead.   Navarrete went 3-for-5, with three RBI, two runs and a walk. Johnny Hernandez, Harris and Cavagnaro each chipped in two hits apiece.   Smith (2-2) suffered the loss, tossing two and one-third innings, surrendering seven hits and eight runs, with five walks. (11-5) Cate earned the win, firing six innings, yielding five hits and two runs, while fanning two.   The Ducks and Bears wrap up their series on Wednesday. Game time is set for 6:35 p.m., with the Citibank Park gates opening at 5:35 p.m. The first 1,500 fans will receive Mini-Footballs by Regent Sports. B.J. LaMura makes the start for Long Island against Newark's Ramiro Mendoza.
