Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC - The Wilson Tobs (8-15) connected for three home runs against the Steamers (15-6) in a come from behind 8-5 win over Edenton at Historic Hicks Field on Saturday.
Right- handed pitcher Taylor Braun (Wright State University) made his second start of the season for the Steamers against right-handed pitcher Brett Ash, who was making his fifth start of the season for the Wilson Tobs.
The Tobs came into the game with no home runs as a team in 2012 and in the top of the second inning Bill Gerstenslager hit the first one of the season, a two-run home run after Zach Houchins walked to put Wilson out in front 2-0.
Edenton tied the game in the bottom of the second when Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) doubled. Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania) doubled right behind him to make it 2-1 Tobs. Two batters later Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) hit an RBI groundout that scored Branigan from third to tie the game at 2-2.
In the bottom of the third inning Camporeale hit his fifth home run of the season, a two-run blast off of Ash to give Edenton a 4-2 lead. The home run by Camporeale tied his teammate Branigan for the CPL lead with five home runs apiece. The Steamers as team lead the CPL in big flys with 17.
The Steamers tacked on an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth when Blaise Fernandez (George Mason University) hit a leadoff single. A Meadows ground out moved Fernandez to third and he came home to score when DJ Johnson (Mercer University) reached on an error by the third baseman Collins Cuthrell and it was 5-2 Edenton.
Braun came out for the sixth inning but did not make it out of the frame. Jackson Slaid singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Phillip Williams. A Joe Costigan ground out moved Slaid to third and then Zach Houchins hit a two-run home run to make it 5-4 Steamers.
Braun pitched 5.2 innings and allowed four runs (all earned) on five hits and two walks; he struck out three Tobs and did not receive a decision for his efforts.
Wilson tied the game on a defensive miscue by the Steamers in the top of the seventh. Joey Hawkins singled off of right-handed pitcher Matt Duncan (Morehead State University). After a sacrifice bunt moved Hawkins to second base, Jackson Slaid reached on an error by the second baseman Michael Massi (Mercer University) and Hawkins scored to tie the game 5-5.
Travis Huber (University of Nebraska) came on to pitch for the Steamers in the top of the seventh and finished that inning. In the eighth inning he ran into some trouble. Hawkins reached on a fielder's choice and then Huber hit Collins Cuthrell and Jackson Slaid came up and hit a three-run home run. The third home run of the game for Wilson and the score was 8-5.
Edenton stranded two runners on in the bottom of the eighth and were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth to lose to Wilson 8-5.
Huber took the loss, falling to 0-1, while Kevin Berry earned the win for Wilson. Berry pitched 2.2 innings, and allowed no runs, no hits; he walked three and struck out three. He is now 1-0.
