Reading Fightin Phils News Release
The Reading Fightin Phils scored the game's first run but couldn't hold on to the early lead. They fell to the Altoona Curve 5-2 at home on Saturday.
Vito Friscia and Chris Sharpe each had a hit and an RBI in Saturday's contest.
The first four innings were scoreless on both sides. Logan O'Hoppe led off the bottom of the second inning with a walk. He attempted to score on Sharpe's single but was tagged out at the plate.
Reading scored the game's first run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kevin Vicuna led off with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. He crossed the plate on Sharpe's sacrifice fly to give the Fightins a 1-0 lead.
Altoona scored a run in each of the next two innings to take the lead thanks to two solo home runs.
The Curve tacked on three more runs in the top of the eighth inning. Andres Alvarez led off with a solo home run. Two batters reached and scored on Aaron Shackelford's triple.
The R-Phils responded with a run of their own. Sharpe reached base on a walk. He scored on Friscia's RBI double to make the score 5-2 in favor of Altoona.
Billy Sullivan and the Reading defense held the Curve scoreless in the top of the ninth.
Josh Ockimey led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a single. Jhailyn Ortiz hit a grounder to the pitcher. Ockimey was thrown out on the force but Ortiz was safe at first base. He advanced to second on a balk. Vicuna battled through his at-bat but struck out to end the game.
Colton Eastman took the mound in his first Double-A start of the season. He allowed one run on three hits through six innings for a quality start. He finished with four strikeouts.
Austin Ross pitched the next 1.2 innings. He gave up three runs on three hits, two of which were home runs. Saturday marked the first game since April 21 that Ross gave up a homer. He finished with two strikeouts and took the loss.
Sullivan pitched the final 1.1 innings. He gave up one run on two hits but kept the Curve off the scoreboard in the ninth inning. He struck out two batters.
