Long Ball Powers Clams to Perfect Record vs. Sharks

EDENTON, N.C "" Edenton (34-10, 14-4) used three home runs to score 12 runs and Patrick Peterson pitched six shutout innings as the Steamers routed the Wilmington Sharks 12-0 (26-21, 12-8) at Historic Hicks Field on Saturday Night.

Patrick Peterson (Temple University) pitched six solid innings, never allowing more than one hit in an inning and yielding five total to the Sharks, who never managed to cross the plate in the ball game.

Edenton's offense never missed a beat in the ball game scoring at will against five different Sharks pitchers and racking up 14 hits.

Adam Kirsch (Texas Tech University) started the scoring off in the game with his Steamers franchise record tying 19th double of the season to plate Nick Thompson (East Carolina University) for an early 1-0 lead.

Edenton put the game away in the bottom of the second inning against Sharks starter DJ Thomas with a five run inning capped by Tyler Qualls (Louisiana Tech University) two-run double and Trent Miller (Middle Tennessee State University), who crushed a pitch over the left field high wall for a three-run home run to push the lead to 7-0 Steamers. The long ball for Miller was his seventh of the season and he pushed his RBI total for the summer to 30. Miller is now on an eight game hitting streak where he has batted .545 (18-33) with three home runs, three doubles, 12 singles, 13 RBIs, four runs scored, a walk and a stolen base.

Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) added his name to the RBI party guest list when he slapped his ninth double of the season, scoring Qualls who walked and extending his hitting streak to 13 games.

Thomas, the starter for Wilmington only lasted three innings, getting tanked for six runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out four, taking his second loss of the season.

Thompson, in the fifth, with two men on blasted his eighth home run of the season pushing the blowout lead to 10-0 Edenton. For Thompson, it was RBIs 33, 34 and 35 of the season and he is now on an eight game hitting streak.

Dominic Fratantuono (Towson University) finished the scoring with his fourth home run of the season, a high arcing two-run home run over the high wall in left field for a 12-0 Steamers lead.

Jeremy Bales (Lee University) pitched a scoreless seventh inning and Andrew Nelson (St. Catharine College) came in and pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings to close out the one sided victory.

Edenton, with the win, improves to 8-0 against the Sharks in 2013 and 34-10 overall, the best overall record in the Coastal Plain League. The Clams 14-4 second half record is good for second in the East Division for the second-half title.

After an off day on Sunday Edenton will welcome in the Wilson Tobs for the final time of the 2013 season on Monday, July 30th.
