CPL Alum, Wooten, Debuts with Brewers
July 27, 2013 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain) News Release
Former Wilson Tob and Wilmington Shark Rob Wooten made his major league debut for the Milwaukee Brewers on July 26. Wooten came in out of the bullpen in the fourth inning and pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball allowing only two hits while striking out one.
The former North Carolina Tar Heel was selected by the Brewers in the 13th round of the 2008 MLB draft. During his junior season with the Tar Heels Wooten led the NCAA, and broke the all-time UNC record, for appearances in a game with 47 while posting an ERA of 2.35. His senior season was even better as the right-hander went 6-2 on 42 appearances with an ERA of 1.87.
Wooten made four appearances for the Wilson Tobs during the 2004 summer throwing 4 1/3 scoreless innings. He returned to the CPL for the 2006 summer as a member of the Wilmington Sharks, allowing only six earned runs in 26 2/3 innings pitched for an ERA of 2.03 with 28 strikeouts.
The 6-1, 210 pounder started out his professional career by going 60 plus innings without giving up a home run, spending time with the rookie ball Helena Brewers and Single-A West Virginia Power in 2008 before moving up to the Double-A Brevard County Manatees in 2009. From the 2008 season to mid way through 2009, Wooten accumulated an ERA of 1.46 with 24 saves and 88 strikeouts. Unfortunately, his rise was halted when he began to feel discomfort in his arm and had to undergo Tommy John Surgery forcing him to miss the entire 2010 season.
It took some time but Wooten eventually found his form and by 2012 he was with the Brewer's Triple-A affiliate, the Nashville Sound. His performance in 2013, however, is what caught the eye of the major league club. Wooten was named to the Triple-A All-Star Game after notching 20 saves with an ERA of 2.94 and 45 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched for the Sound this season.
With a beat up bullpen, the Brewers were in need of some fresh arms and Wooten gladly answered the call. He became the 64th Coastal Plain League alum to make his major league debut, and the fifth overall in 2013. His debut gives Wilson nine major leaguers, while it ups Wilmington's total to seven.
