Edenton Steamers News Release

EDENTON, N.C - The Steamers (33-10, 13-4) used a five run third to cruise to an 11-4 win in game one before scratching out two runs in the third to hang on for a 4-3 win in game two, sweeping the double header against the Morehead City Marlins (21-26, 9-10) on Friday night at Historic Hicks Field.

For the second night in a row the Edenton Steamers took to the diamond to play two seven-inning ball games in a row. After last night's 19 total innings tonight's 14 scheduled innings didn't seem so long.

David St. Lawrence (Brown University) got the nod for game one against Logan James of the Marlins.

St. Lawrence battled through his five and one-third innings on the mound, allowing at least two base runners in every frame except the top of the second, when he retired the Marlins in order.

Morehead City was able to scratch a run across in the top of the first with two outs and two runners on, both by way of the fielder's choice, Sam Ott singled home Ryan Cranmer for a 1-0 lead. The Ott single was the only hit of the inning but it plated a run.

Edenton countered with two runs in the bottom of the first against James. Nick Thompson (east Carolina University) extended his hitting streak to six games with an RBI single scoring Jacob Reese (Eastern Illinois University) and then Josh Hampton (Wilmington University), who walked, scored an error for a 2- 1 lead.

The Steamers followed with five more runs in the bottom of the third. Dominic Fratantuono (Towson University) connected for his third home run of the season, a two-run home run three batters into the inning and Reese capped the scoring with a two-run double, with a Chase Harris (University of New Mexico) RBI single sandwiched in between. 7-1 Steamers when the inning came to a close.

Edenton chased James in the bottom of the fourth on three straight RBI singles by T.K Kiernan (Southern Connecticut State University), Alex Delgado (Emmanuel College) and Tyler Eager (Abilene Christian University) for a 10-0 lead.

St Lawrence pitched five and two-third innings and allowed seven hits and four runs (all earned) on five walks and one strikeout. St. Lawrence improved to 3-1 on the season. Morehead City finally got to him in the top of the sixth, Ryan Muno hit a solo home run and then Cole Billingsley slapped a two-run single for an 11-4 Steamer lead.

Edenton picked up its final run on Thompson's second RBI single of the game in the bottom of the eighth.

James pitched three and two-third innings and was dinged for 11 hits and 10 runs (nine earned), he walked five and struck out three, taking his second loss of the season.

Game two pitted Dylan Shoffner (St. Catharine College) against Justin Taylor. Shoffner was making his first start since June 5th and his third overall.

Ryan Cranmer, the CPL leader in home runs, added another notch on his belt with a solo home run in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 Marlins lead. After Ryan Muno walked, Brad Haynal singled him home for a 2-0 lead.

Trent Miller (Middle Tennessee State University) came up in the bottom half of the inning with one out and Fratantuono on first base. Miller knocked one out of the ballpark for a 2-2 tie. The long ball was Miller's sixth of the season.

Morehead City took a 3-2 lead when Haynal hit a sacrifice fly against Shoffner in the top of the third scoring Cranmer who walked earlier.

The Steamers followed with another counter-punch when Thompson singled and Fratantuono doubled him home to tie the game 3-3. Hampton followed with an RBI single, his league-leading 38th RBI of the season for a 4-3 Steamers lead.

Rohn Pierce (Canisius College) came in after Shoffner pitched three and two-third innings, allowing six hits and three runs on three walks and two strikeouts. Pierce pitched the final three and one-third innings, allowing only one hit and striking out five to close out the 4-3 win.

Pierce earned the win to improve to 2-0 for his relief work and Taylor took the loss, falling to 1-6 on the season for his four innings of work. He allowed six hits and four runs on three walks and five strikeouts.

Edenton improves to 33-10 overall and 13-4 in the second half. Edenton has now won 16 straight at home and improves their home record to 18-2.

The Steamers welcome in the Wilmington Sharks tomorrow night for the two teams final meeting of 2013. First pitch at 7:00 p.m.
