Lone Star Brahmas News Release
The Lone Star Brahmas continued their home stand on Friday night with the Topeka Roadrunners in town for a two game set. Topeka rolled into the NYTEX Sports Centre as the number one team in the NAHL carrying a 15-2-1 record, but the Brahmas came to play and controlled the game from the opening faceoff.
Hogan Davidson got the all important first goal at 7:13 of the first when he knocked the puck loose from Beau Dommer at the blueline and went barreling into the zone down the right side then ripped it past Drew Vogler glove side. Lone Star just missed going up two with nine minutes left in the period on an Alexey Solovyev bomb from the point that rang off the far post. The near miss did not deflate the momentum and it didn't take long for them to net the second goal when Sebastian Vidmar split the defense just inside the blueline and slid it across to Pat Egan who let it fly from the top of the far circle. Despite the fact that Vogler saw it all the way it was by his left shoulder before he could react. Time of the goal was 12:36.
The Brahmas opened the second period on a four minute penalty kill due to a double minor high sticking call to Liam Stirtzinger at the end of the first. However, the penalty kill unit was up to the task and did not allow the Roadrunners a single shot on goal on the extended power play. Then at 8:53 of the period, Hunter Stanley made a big play to keep in a clearing attempt at the far point. He sent it behind the net to Solovyev who rolled it out front to Quinn Carroll and he pounded it off Vogler. Stanley followed the play and was in place to put the rebound over Vogler's right pad.
Topeka finally got on the board with a power play goal from Daniel Brickley that went of Davidson and redirected past TJ Black at 11:39 with assists to Mike Gornall and Sly Sutter. The middle frame ended without further scoring and the Brahmas took a 3 - 1 lead into the intermission.
Lone Star netted a power play goal early in the third to build a three goal lead. They were cycling the puck when Ludvig Larsson fed it from behind the net to Oskar Andrenin the near circle. Andren found Solovyev at the far point for a Howitzer that ate Vogler alive. Time of the goal was 4:49. Seconds later on a faceoff to Vogler's right Vidmar pounded one off the crossbar. As in the first period it didn't take long for the Brahmas to score after the puck off the pipe. At 6:50 Vidmar skated the puck into the zone, delayed then fired it on net. Vogler made the save, but Egan swooped in to put the rebound into the back of the net.
The Brahmas outshot the visiting Roadrunners 27 - 23 and both teams converted one power play opportunity with Topeka going 1 - 7 and Lone Star 1 - 4.
