Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Kevin Gregg allowed two hits over seven innings of work and retired the final 13 batters he faced to lead the Salt Lake Stingers to a 7-0 win over the Portland Beavers in front of 6,217 Friday night at PGE Park.
Gregg, a native of Corvallis, Ore., struck out five, did not allow a walk and faced just one batter over the minimum to improve to 2-3 on the year. Both of Gregg's victories have come against the Beavers.
Barry Wesson went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the Stingers (47-52) at the plate. His RBI single in the seventh capped a four-run inning as Salt Lake built a commanding 7-0 lead. Jason Hill hit a solo home run and Gary Johnson had a two-RBI triple as the Stingers batted around in the frame.
Clay Condrey took the loss for the Beavers (49-51), allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits over 6.2 innings. Condrey fell to 2-1.
With the loss, the Beavers fell to 21-27 at home this season. Portland also dropped another game behind Edmonton in the standings. The Trappers were a 12-1 winner over Tucson Friday night and are now three games ahead of the second-place Beavers in the North Division.
An error by first baseman Tagg Bozied allowed Johnson to reach base to lead off the second. The error proved costly, as Wesson launched a two-run home run onto the boardwalk in left field to give the Stingers the early lead.
The Stingers made it 3-0 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Julio Ramirez that scored Wesson from third.
The Beavers were limited to three base runners in the game and never advanced a runner past first base.
NOTES: Bernie Castro was thrown out attempting to steal second in the bottom of the first inning, his first caught stealing since June 30 ... Castro stole eight bases without getting caught in between ... Tagg Bozied, who hit five home runs in a 10-game span June 11-20, has not homered in his last 92 at-bats ... Phil Nevin was 0-for-3 in the second game of his rehab stint with Portland ... Nevin served as the Beavers' designated hitter Friday night ... the Beavers committed three errors in the game, their most since tallying three miscues June 13 at Albuquerque.
