Edmonton Trappers News Release

Left fielder Terrmel Sledge was 4-for-5 with two runs scored, a double and two RBI as the Edmonton Trappers crushed the Tucson Sidewinders 12-1 Friday night in the first game of a doubleheader at Tucson Electric Park. The Sidewinders returned the favour by winning the second game 10-0 behind the stellar pitching of right-hander John Patterson (6-3). Sledge also doubled in the second game and has hit safely in all three games in this series. The split of the twinbill increases the Trappers lead over the second-place Portland Beavers to 3 ½ games in the North Division of the PCL. The Trappers and Sidewinders will continue this five-game set on Saturday night at Tucson Electric Park. Edmonton will return home to begin a 10-game homestand against the Las Vegas 51s on Monday night.

Trappers' center fielder Peter Bergeron led off the first inning of the first game with a single off Tucson starter Mike Gosling (8-9). Luis Figueroa drew a walk and Luis Ortiz singled with one out to plate Bergeron with the game's first run. Edmonton starter Sun Woo Kim (6-5) drove in the second run of the contest with a single in the second frame that scored shortstop Anthony Medrano from second. Valentino Pascucci gave the Trappers a four-run lead with a two-run homer off Gosling in the third inning. Sledge increased the Trappers' lead to six runs with a two-run double in the fourth inning that plated Randy Knorr and Bergeron, both of whom had singled. Brian Gordon plated the Sidewinders only run of the game with a solo shot off Kim in the bottom of the fourth. Third baseman Scott Hodges homered with one on in the fifth inning to put the Trappers up 8-1. They added four more runs in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Figueroa, an RBI single by Hodges, an RBI single by Medrano and an RBI single by Knorr.

The second game was the complete opposite of the first with the Sidewinders getting to Edmonton starter Blake Stein (1-1) early for 10 runs on 11 hits and two walks in only 2.1 innings of work. They plated three runs in the first frame off the right-hander. Junior Spivey led off with a double, Chad Tracy drew a walk and Mike Bell doubled to score Spivey. Doug Devore then doubled, scoring Tracy and Bell, giving Patterson more than enough run support. He allowed three hits and one walk, while striking out seven for the win. Shortstop Jhonny Carvajal led off the second inning with his first home run of the season to put the Sidewinders up by four runs. They plated six more runs in the third off Stein. Steve Neal tripled to score Devore, Tim Olson doubled to drive home Neal and Patterson singled to knock home Olson. A double by Spivey plated Carvajal with the fourth run of the frame. Tracy closed out the scoring with a two-run single that scored Spivey and Patterson.
