New Jersey Jackals News Release

Pittsfield, Mass. - After the Pittsfield Colonials used a pair of big innings to notch a 12-2 win in game one, New Jersey returned the favor in the nightcap as Ryan Lobban pitched the Jackals to a 4-1 victory to earn the doubleheader split on Tuesday night at Wahconah Park. With 12 games remaining in the regular season, New Jersey is now a half-game behind the Worcester Tornadoes for the fourth and final playoff spot.

After Pittsfield pounded out 12 runs and 13 hits in the first contest, Lobban (4-2) stifled the Colonials in game two. The 26-year-old southpaw turned in a seven-inning complete game and allowed just one run on four hits with six strikeouts en route to his first win since July 3.

New Jersey plated three runs in the second inning to stake Lobban to an early lead. First baseman Jabe Bergeron led off the frame with his team-leading 16th home run of the season to open the scoring. Carlos Sosa followed with an infield single before scoring on a Kyle Zaleski wild pitch and later in the frame, an RBI single by Kevin Clark made it 3-0. That score held until the top of the seventh, when an Abraham Nunez RBI single extended the New Jersey advantage to 4-0. Eight different players were responsible for New Jersey's eight hits in the contest.

Pittsfield's lone run came with one out in the bottom of the seventh when Donny Leon deposited his fifth homer of the season just inside the left field foul pole and just over the wall to spoil Lobban's complete-game shutout bid. Zaleski (7-6) lost his fifth straight decision after yielding three runs on seven hits in six frames.

In game one, Pittsfield plated six runs on six singles in the first inning against Justin Jones to take a 6-0 lead before Danny Bomback led off the second inning with his seventh home run of the season to make it 7-0.

After Jackals center fielder Adam Godwin laced his fourth homer of the season leading off the sixth to put New Jersey on the scoreboard, Pittsfield countered with five more runs in the bottom of the frame behind the strength of home runs from Daniel Carte and Chris Torres against reliever Lou Fernandez to extend the Colonials lead to 12-1. Torres' pinch-hit three-run blast over the left field foul pole came on the first pitch he saw.

New Jersey's Jacob Butler clubbed his 15th homer of the season in the top of the seventh to cap the scoring at 12-2.

Jones (0-2) was tagged for seven runs on nine hits in five innings while Pittsfield's Dave Qualben (5-7) allowed two runs on five hits to earn the win in a complete-game effort.

The Jackals (16-18 second half, 35-45 overall) and Colonials (17-17 second half, 37-44 overall) conclude their three-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at Wahconah Park when New Jersey sends southpaw Jayson Miller (2-3, 4.61) to the mound against Pittsfield rookie left-hander Jon Venters (1-4, 6.89).
