
Ljay Newsome Wins Second NWL Pitcher of the Week Award

EVERETT, Wash. - Ljay Newsome was honored for the second time this season as the Northwest League Pitcher of the Week. This award recognized Newsome's performance for the week of August 8-14.
Newsome's one start for the period came on August 12 against the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes. He tossed six and two-third innings allowing one run on two hits, while striking out six batters and walking none.
Ljay Newsome's first Northwest League Pitcher of the Week award was for the period of June 20-26. Newsome logged twelve innings in two starts for the week against the Vancouver Canadians and the Boise Hawks.
Newsome was one of five AquaSox selected to represent the Northwest League in Ogden, Utah at the 2016 All-Star game. He pitched one scoreless inning, aiding the Northwest League to a 11-5 win.
Newsome's current stat line: (5-2), 3.89 ERA, 10 G, 8 GS, 44.0 IP, 40 SO, 6 BB, 1.14 WHIP.
Ljay Newsome is 19 years old from La Plata, MD. Newsome was selected in the 26th round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners out of Chopticon High School in Maryland. He pitched ten innings in Rookie Ball last season before being assigned to Everett to begin the 2016 season.
With Ljay winning his second award, the AquaSox have now had five NWL Players of the Week. The other AquaSox to receive the award were Elliot Surrey, Kyle Lewis and Nick Zammarelli.
