Lions ink Phillips and Johnson

(Vancouver) The BC Lions Football Club announced today that import defensive back Ryan Phillips and import linebacker Jamall Johnson have signed contract extensions with the team. In keeping with club policy, terms of each deal were not disclosed.

Phillips will enter his third season with the Lions after originally joining the club as a free agent in 2005. The Eastern Washington grad appeared in all 18 regular season games in 2006 recording 23 tackles, two interceptions (one for a TD), three pass knockdowns, two fumble recoveries, and a sack.

Johnson, a special teams sparkplug will also remain the Lions for his third season after an effective 2006 campaign. Battling injuries, Johnson managed to record five special teams tackles and seven more defensive stops. The 24 year-old also returned a fumble for a touchdown in Week 1 versus Saskatchewan.

"Both Ryan and Jamall were key parts to our success in 2006," said Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono. "I expect them to make significant contributions in years to come, and I am very pleased to have them back with us."
