Lincoln Trades Philippe Lapointe for Max Ellis, Swaps Picks with Central Illinois
November 28, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Lincoln Stars News Release
The Stars announced Wednesday that they've traded veteran forward Philippe Lapointe and a conditional 2020 draft pick to the Central Illinois Flying Aces for forward Max Ellis and a 2019 Phase-I draft pick.
With the move, the Stars are adding both production and further experience. Ellis, a Notre Dame commit, is playing in his third year in the USHL and has scored five goals and ten assists through 21 games this season. The '01 spent the previous two years with the Youngstown Phantoms, tallying 22 goals and 32 assists in 107 regular season games. In 16 postseason games with Youngstown, he notched two goals and seven points.
"I think Max brings some speed and the ability to score," said Stars head coach Cody Chupp. "He's a guy we think that can slot into our top-six very comfortably and help our offensive output. He's a guy who has a lot of experience in this league, and has had some success here. He's obviously a guy who is a veteran presence. We hope that he's able to lead through example as a guy who's been through it before, and that he can come in and bolster our offense."
Philippe Lapointe played a total of 85 games for the Stars, registering eight goals and 29 assists in that span. The Michigan commitment also played for the US National U18 team, highlighted by scoring a goal and an assist at the 2017-18 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
"Phil's brought a ton," said Chupp. "It's pretty hard to put into words what he's meant to us for almost a year and a half now. He came in as a young kid, found his way in the league and worked through that first year and found some success. Coming into this year he has been an extremely high-character guy that says the right things and does the right things, so obviously it's an emotional trade for us. Some trades are just based on what can you make you better. This one had a lot of emotion involved in it."
"We recognize and appreciate the contributions Phil's made both on and off the ice," said Stars GM Jon Hull. "We wish him the best with this new opportunity. We know he'll make the most of it."
The Stars capped the trade by adding a 2019 Phase-I 3rd round draft pick. In return they traded a conditional pick for 2020.
Lincoln will return to the ice Friday at the Ice Box to take on their arch rival Omaha Lancers. Puck drop is at 7:05 PM CST.
