Lincoln Downs Tri-City with Late Overtime Goal

KEARNEY, Neb. - An overtime tally from defenseman Paul LaDue in the final minute of the extra frame gave the Lincoln Stars (16-8-3) a 2-1 victory over the Tri-City Storm (12-13-4) on Friday night at the Viaero Event Center.
Storm goaltender Johan Mattsson did all he could to keep his team in the game, making 48 saves on 50 shots. Lincoln backstop Michael Bitzer shone in the win, making 40 saves on 41 Tri-City shots.
After a scoreless first period, the Stars took the lead on an unassisted goal by defenseman Travis Maxwell at 16:04 of the second.
The Storm outshot Lincoln 19-10 in the second, but entered the final frame trailing 1-0.
It didn't take long for Tri-City forward Tim Bonner to even the game, scoring just over four minutes into the third period to tie the game 1-1. Kyle Eastman started the play, and was credited with his fourth assist of the season.
Bonner's tally was his twelfth of the year, giving him 23 points in 29 games this season. Ryan Ivey was credited with the second assist on the play, his second helper of the year.
The game stayed deadlocked and headed into overtime. Late in the five-minute period, LaDue found room at the right circle of the Tri-City zone and beat Mattsson, giving the Stars the victory.
Tri-City will head to Omaha to face the Lancers on Saturday night at the Ralston Arena at 7:30 p.m. The Storm's next home game will be on Monday for a special New Year's Eve tilt with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at 5:05 p.m.
