Limited Edition Scarf and Auction to Support Local Refugee Support Organizations

June 16, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release

June 20 marks World Refugee Day and the Indomitable Club is inviting its fans to help highlight the issues facing refugees around the globe, and support a local organization that is working to provide those in need with help.

Designated by the United Nations, World Refugee Day is an annual occasion to build empathy and understanding for the plight refugees face each day, and to celebrate the courage and strength that it takes a person to flee a place that they call home. It was held globally for the first time on June 20, 2001, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees.

A refugee is someone who fled his or her home and country owing to "a well-founded fear of persecution because of his/her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion", according to the United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention. Many refugees are in exile to escape the effects of natural or human-made disasters.

This year, Republic FC has created a limited-edition World Refugee Scarf to help raise funds for World Relief Sacramento. Since 1989, World Relief Sacramento and its partners have welcomed over 30,000 refugees and immigrants in the Northern California area. 20% of each scarf sold will go directly to supporting World Relief Sacramento's work in the region, helping refugees with resettlement and employment services, legal aid, and much more.

The scarf is available for purchase now in the team store and online at shop.sacrepublicfc.com.

The limited-edition scarf was designed by Sunroop Kaur, a Republic FC Artist Spotlight (LINK) contributor. Her work is a fusion of classical Italian baroque styles with Indian miniature aesthetics. Allowing for exploration of her own identity and cultural context.

This limited-edition scarf was created in celebration of World Refugee Day (June 20). Featuring the pairing of two tones, ultramarine blue and gold, they denote royalty and form a connection dating all the way back to antiquity. The utilization of the aesthetic brings a complexity to the scarf reminiscent of historical Indian Miniature work.

On the back, "One World. One Game." serves as a reminder that the world's game is for everyone, and that it can serve as a bridge to lift up and help those in need.

In honor of World Refugee Day, this scarf is a celebration of the world's game. The scarf is a continuation of Republic FC's efforts to generate awareness for the current refugee crisis and Sacramento's role as the largest resettlement location in the United States.

In addition to the limited-edition scarf, Kaur designed a one-of-one selection that will be auctioned by Republic FC.

"As a Punjabi Sikh woman, my work often features self-portraiture," Kaur said. "It allows me to cultivate spaces where the duality of my identity is not only able to find reconciliation but be investigated through various discourses. The appropriation of Western classical art in my work is how I decolonize my body and cultural roots. The hybridization of "brown" sitters in Eurocentric spaces is an active reclamation of identity."

Bidding on the original work by Kaur is now open. The auction will close on World Refugee Day, Sunday June 20 at 8:00 p.m.
