Lights FC Kicks off Three Game Road Trip with Visit to El Paso
June 14, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Las Vegas Lights FC News Release
Lights FC started their three-game road trip by visiting El Paso Locomotive FC, who entered the match on a ten game undefeated streak (eight of those matches being wins).
Las Vegas struck first, shocking the "Locos" with a quick play that concluded with Eric Oteng connecting with Tabort Etaka Preston, who with a header opened the score for the Lights' in just the third minute of play.
El Paso leveled the score from the penalty spot after Tyler Bagley committed a foul in the box. Luis Solignac put the ball in the back of the net in the 24th minute to tie the game.
Just five minutes later, referee Elijio Arreguin called another penalty for the home side. This time due to a hand ball in the box from Marcelo Lage. Lights FC goalkeeper Leo Diaz wasn't going to allow this one to be scored, saving his third penalty kick of the season. He's the only USL Championship goalkeeper who has stopped multiple penalty kicks in 2023.
Unfortunately, the Lights' ended up conceding a score 2 minutes later with a header from Erik McCue from a corner kick executed by Denys Kostyshyn.
Vegas was extremely aggressive the rest of the game, including a shot from Pato Botello Faz that appeared to cross the goal line, but it wasn't called that way by the officiating crew. Locomotive FC ended up winning the game 2-1.
NEXT GAME:
Lights FC will continue their road trip with a Saturday match against Colorado Springs, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. PT.
NEXT HOME GAME:
The next match for the Lights' in Downtown Las Vegas will be on July 1st against Eastern Conference powerhouse Tampa Bay Rowdies, who have Lights FC's all-time leading scorer Cal Jennings in their roster. That will be the first of four consecutive games at Cashman Field for Las Vegas.
