Hartford Athletic News Release
After equalizing in the first half, Hartford Athletic fell behind Detroit City FC and couldn't get back into the match a second time.
Three goals and a Joe Rice save on a penalty kick headlined the first half of tonight's match. Detroit struck first in the 24th minute when Ben Morris broke through Hartford's back line and blasted a shot into the bottom right corner of the net. Ten minutes later, Detroit had a prime opportunity to extend their lead when a hand ball in Hartford's box earned the visitors a penalty kick. Maxi Rodriguez took the try and was denied by Joe Rice, who made a brilliant diving save to the left corner of the net. A massive save by Rice to breathe life into Hartford, the Green and Blue quickly got into Detroit's third and equalized on the following possession. Rice booted his goal kick to midfield and the ball was recovered by Kyle Edwards. He took his defender on towards Detroit's box and laid the ball off to Prince Saydee. The Liberian forward's shot was blocked and fell to Antoine Hoppenot, and the former Detroit City forward fired his shot past Nathan Steinwascher to tie the game at 1-1.
With the momentum now in Hartford's favor, Detroit roared back and regained the lead six minutes later. After a free kick was looped into traffic into Hartford's box, Ben Morris tapped a pass to Skage Simonsen and Simonsen beat Joe Rice to the right corner of the goal. Down 2-1, Hartford nearly brought themselves level again before the half, peppering three shots in Detroit's box after another strong run from Kyle Edwards. Two of the three shots were blocked and one was off target, keeping the score at 2-1 going into the locker rooms.
Both teams generated a shot in the first two minutes of the second half, with Juan Pablo Torres putting one on target for Hartford. After about 10 minutes of steady play mostly in the middle of the field, Ben Morris struck again for Detroit City. Rhys Williams made a blistering run up the left side of the field and crossed a perfect ball to Morris, who squared his shot past Rice.
Hartford were unable to fight their way back into the game after falling down two goals. They out possessed Detroit 63.9% to 36.1% as the visitors became more defensive, but their six final shots were all off target. The match ended 3-1, extending Hartford's winless streak to seven when conceding first this season.
Edgardo Rito was Hartford's offensive engine in his home debut in Green and Blue, doing well to generate two chances and firing eight crosses. Conor Mcglynn took five shots, Luke Merrill made four tackles and swiped four interceptions, and Joe Rice made two saves. Hartford fall to 2-8-4, and host Charleston this Saturday at 7:00 PM.
