Rockford Lightning News Release

Sidney Holmes tied up Jimmy Hunter with 20 seconds left in the game and the Lightning down by one point. After winning the jump ball, it was 5-foot-10 guard Cordell Henry that came up big for the Lightning.

Henry drove through the lane and scored with 4.7 seconds remaining in the game to give the Lightning a 124-123 lead over the Gary Steelheads on Sunday night at the MetroCentre. The game would end shortly after on the other end of the court with a jumper from Randy Holcomb that came up short. The Lightning's streak of 4 losses ended at home with a big win over the conference leader.

The Lightning fell behind early as Jimmy "Snap" Hunter came out firing in the first quarter. Snap scored 20 of his game high 39 points in the first quarter to give the Steelheads a 42-37 lead after the opening period. Led by Ronnie Field's 15 first half points the Lightning battled back to take a 73-60 lead into the locker room at halftime. Gary battled back in the third to take a 104-103 lead into the fourth.

The game appeared to be anything but a defensive battle with each team averaging nearly 35 points per quarter over the first three quarters. However, the Lightning outscored their opponents 21-19 in the quarter and won the game by a single point. They picked up 5-quarter points in their first victory in the month of December.

Henry led the Lightning with 24 points in the game. Marlon Parmer added 22 points and 6 assists while Ronnie Fields turned in 21 points and 8 rebounds in the win. John Jackson came off the bench to score a season high 18 points and grab 5 rebounds for Rockford.

"It was another typical Rockford-Gary rivalry game", said Lightning Head Coach Chris Daleo. "I feel like a giant monkey has been lifted off my back with tonight's victory (referring to ending the team's season high 4-game losing streak)." Daleo moved into a tie with former Lightning Coach Mike Mashak for third place on the all-time list for regular season wins at 89 with Sunday night's victory.

The Lightning's next home game is this Thursday at 7:05 P.M. (CST) against the Albany Patroons. The Lightning took the first two meetings against the Patroons back in November at Albany, and they will look to improve on their 6-5 record this season.
