Lightning Sign Veteran Shelly Clark for Title Run

February 1, 2006 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1)
Rockford Lightning News Release

The Rockford Lightning announced today that they have signed forward/center Shelly Clark, pending league approval. Terms and conditions of the contract were not disclosed.

Clark joins Rockford rookie Roger Powell as another University of Illinois alumni with the Lightning this season. After graduating in 1995, Clark was drafted into the CBA by the Fort Wayne Fury with the sixty-sixth overall pick.

As a 6-foot-9, 255-pound CBA veteran that can play both the forward and center positions, Clark brings a powerful and more importantly veteran inside presence to the Lightning roster. He has played each of the last two seasons with the Gary Steelheads where he was named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team both years. In 2004-05, Clark averaged 15.9 points and 8.7 rebounds in 41 games (39 starts) for the Steelheads. He has also spent considerable time playing overseas in Turkey, Israel, Puerto Rico, Cypress and Argentina. During 2005, Clark played with Macizos de Guayana in Venezuela, where he was named to both the All-Venezuelan and All-Imports team. Over the summer, he played in the Minnesota Summer League with the Indiana Pacers' team. Clark also played seven games with the Steelheads during the 2005-06 season.

To make room for Clark on the roster, the Lightning waived 7-1 rookie center Marcus Campbell. Campbell averaged 5.0 points and 3.2 rebounds in 29 games for the Lightning this season. He had his best performance of the season in a 106-113 Lightning loss to the Steelheads on November 20th where he picked up 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 25 minutes.

"This was strictly a basketball decision," said Lightning Head Coach Chris Daleo. "Marcus Campbell is a great young talent. He worked hard and did everything I asked of him. I am sorry to see him go, but I felt I needed another veteran post presence, especially with the new playoff format this season."

Clark will be in uniform tonight wearing No. 13 as the Lightning take on the Idaho Stampede at the MetroCentre. Tip-off is set for 7:05 P.M. (CST), with the first 1,000 fans in attendance receiving a Roger Powell trading card. Great seats are still available for the game, and kids tickets are half price. Group tickets can be purchased through the Lightning Office by calling 815-874-4232. Single game tickets can be purchased through the MetroCentre Box Office by calling 815-968-5222 or online at www.centreevents.com.
