Rockford Lightning News Release

(February 26, 2003) – The Rockford Lightning had a plan to clinch the American Conference title by the end of February; and apparently it could be called "The Marshall Plan."

Lightning forward Marshall Phillips had a career night Tuesday as the Lightning score a 117-98 victory over the Great Lakes Storm. The Lightning claims 6.5 of a possible 7 quarter points, giving the Bolts 192 on the season. No other American Conference team can finish with more than 191 quarter-points, thus insuring a 2nd straight CBA American Conference title for the Lightning.

After scoring 21 first quarter points as a Lightning team, Marshall Phillips scored 21 second quarter points all by himself Tuesday night. Phillips finishes with a season high 40 points. He also set season standards in assists (7), steals (6), free throws made (15) and free throws attempted (16). Phillips grabbed 7 of his team-high 10 rebounds on the offensive end.

Ronnie Fields eclipsed the 1 thousand-point mark for the season and 2 thousand points for his Lightning career en route to a 23-point night as the Lightning improve to 9-1 against the Storm this season. That represents the most wins Rockford has recorded against any one opponent in a single season. It's also the first time a team has failed to score 100 or more points against Rockford this year.

It's the 8th straight home victory for the Rockford Lightning as they finish February with a 9-2 mark. That represents the Lightning's best month since the 1992-93 squad went 11-0 in March of that season. The Lightning start March of 2003 on the road with games at Dakota and Sioux Falls, before finishing the regular season on a three game home stand. The dates of those final three games are Thursday March 6th at 7:05 against the Skyforce; Saturday March 8th at 1:05 against the Storm and Sunday March 9th at 7:05 against the National Conference leading Dakota Wizards.
