Hoops Race toward CBA Playoffs

February 26, 2003 - Continental Basketball Association 2 (CBA 2)
Grand Rapids Hoops News Release

The Continental Basketball Association's Grand Rapids HOOPS departed on a three-game, six-day road trip early yesterday morning with hopes of returning with a playoff berth. With just six games remaining, the HOOPS hold a slim advantage over the Gary Steelheads for the playoff berth in the American Conference.

Grand Rapids (20-22, 149.0 quarter points) has continued to play outstanding team basketball, led by offensive standouts Jerald Honeycutt and Alex Scales, despite numerous roster changes throughout this season. However, the team has a tough road ahead of them as they travel to meet National Conference powers, the Dakota Wizards and Yakima Sun Kings (twice) while on the road swing. The two teams currently hold a combined 34-7 home record, while the HOOPS are 8-12 in road games this season.

Gary (22-22, 150.5 QP) has brought themselves back into the race with their current three-game winning streak. Led by Illinois-alum Bryant Notree, the Steelheads will square off with the struggling Great Lakes Storm twice in the upcoming week. The two teams will face off on the next to last day of the season, March 7, at the Genesis Convention Center, in a game which could ultimately decide the final playoff berth.

Three other teams have previously clinched a playoff berth. The Rockford Lightning lead the American Conference with a league-best 29-13 record and 185.5 quarter points, while Dakota (25-15, 173.0 QP) and Yakima (27-15, 174.5 QP) are in competition for first place and home-court advantage in the National Conference.

Unlike other leagues, the CBA determines playoff eligibility by quarter points and not winning percentage. Thus, a team with a better record can be left out if another team has earned more quarter points. In each game, a single quarter point is awarded for each quarter won and three points are awarded to the winning team.

The HOOPS next home game is Wednesday, March 5 against Yakima. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EST.
