Grand Rapids Prepares for CBA Finals

March 20, 2003 - Continental Basketball Association 2 (CBA 2)
Grand Rapids Hoops News Release

The Grand Rapids HOOPS will depart Saturday morning for a day-long trip to the West Coast to begin their quest for their first-ever CBA Championship. The team secured their spot in the 2003 CBA Finals on Wednesday night with a 127-124 victory over the Rockford Lightning to lock up their best-of-five American Conference Championship series three games to one. The Hoops came back to win the final three games of the series after falling in Game One in Rockford.

Grand Rapids will now travel to face the National Conference champions, the Yakima Sun Kings, in a one-game CBA Championship at the Yakima Valley Sun Dome on Monday, March 24. Tip-off is scheduled for 10:05 p.m. EST.

The Hoops return to the CBA post-season after failing to qualify following the 2001-02 season. First-year Head Coach Rod Baker continues a stretch in which every head coach in Hoops' history has made it to the playoffs in their rookie campaign (seventh coach overall). Grand Rapids has posted a league-high 129.3 points per game in their series with Rockford, while also setting a franchise record with 114.4 points per game in the regular season. Jerald Honeycutt and Alex Scales have led the Hoops' offense with 23.8 and 23.3 points per game, respectively.

Yakima was spurred to victory in the CBA semifinals by the return of point guard Anthony Goldwire, who was sent down by the Washington Wizards prior to Game Three of their series with the defending CBA champion Dakota Wizards. Goldwire averaged 31.0 points per game, including an incredible 10-12 from three point range, while former Michigan State Spartan and Benton Harbor native Anthony Miller has posted 10.8 points and 12.5 rebounds per game.
