Lightning Buy Out Contract of Goaltender Marc Denis

TAMPA BAY - The Tampa Bay Lightning have bought out the contract of goaltender Marc Denis today, Executive Vice President and General Manager Jay Feaster announced. Denis had one year remaining on his contract.

"Needless to say, we are all sorry things didn't work out differently for Marc with our organization," Feaster said. "To his credit, Marc has been the ultimate professional to the very end, handling this news with the same dignity and grace as he has handled everything that has happened during his tenure in Tampa. We wish him nothing but success as he moves forward with his career."

Denis played in 54 games in two seasons with Tampa Bay from 2006-08. He posted a record of 18-23-1 with a .879 save percentage and a 3.32 goals-against average. In 2006-07 he posted a 17-18-1 record with a .883 save percentage and a 3.19 goals-against average in 44 games. He ranked fourth in the NHL, first among goaltenders with more than six shots faced, in shootout save percentage with .900, stopping 18 of 20 attempts against. He earned a 4-1 record in shootouts.

Last season Denis played in 10 games with Tampa Bay and posted a 1-5-0 record with a .859 save percentage and a 4.05 goals-against average. He was reassigned to the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League on December 29, 2007. He played in 32 games with Norfolk and had a 11-17-2 record. Denis led the Admirals in goals-against average with 2.91 and a .910 save percentage.

The Lightning acquired the Montreal, Quebec native from Columbus in exchange for Fredrik Modin and Fredrik Norrena on June 30, 2006. Denis is a veteran of 348 games and has a career record of 112-179-28 with a .902 save percentage and a 3.02 goals-against average. He also has 16 career shutouts.

Denis was selected in the first round, 25th overall, by Colorado at the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut by playing one game for Colorado during the 1996-97 season, and he joined Hershey of the American Hockey League for the playoffs that year and helped the Bears capture the Calder Cup while appearing in four games. He became a regular for Hershey the following season, and in two seasons with the Bears (1997-98, 1998-99) he posted a 37-46-9 record and 2.86 goals-against average and won the top goaltender award at the 1999 AHL All-Star Classic.

After one season as a backup in Colorado, Denis was acquired by Columbus in 2000 and he improved his goals-against average in each of his first four seasons. In 2002-03 he posted a career-best 27 wins for a team that won 29 games total, and in 2003-04 he posted a career-best 2.56 goals-against average as the Blue Jackets won 25 games. Denis established what was then an NHL record with 4,511 minutes played in 2002-03
