New York Liberty News Release
NEW YORK - The New York Liberty today unveiled a specialized 25th Anniversary logo to commemorate its quarter of a century as a Women's National Basketball Association franchise. As one of only three original teams remaining in the league, the Liberty was founded on October 30, 1996 and will celebrate its silver anniversary throughout the 2021 season.
"You can't talk about New York basketball without mentioning the New York Liberty," said Keia Clarke, Liberty CEO. "As we celebrate 25 years of world-class basketball, we will honor the remarkable women and defining moments of our organization's past and present. This new logo adds another meaningful stamp to the history of this storied franchise, and we are eager to celebrate with New York this upcoming season."
The commemorative badge pays homage to the franchise's origin while embracing its new era. While the Liberty's anniversary mark is centered with its current logo, it's surrounded by a large "25" framed in copper, the original color of the Statue of Liberty before its aging process, and topped with a crown. The crown in the logo is symbolic of Liberty players being the original queens of the court, as the only professional women's basketball team in New York and one of the first in the league.
In its 25-year tenure, the Liberty have made four WNBA Finals appearances (1997, 1999, 2000, 2002) and won three Eastern Conference Championships (1999, 2000, 2002).
Details regarding the Liberty's 25th anniversary events, activations and initiatives will be announced in the coming months.
