New York Liberty News Release
NEW YORK, NY - The vision of Abbott House is to make promising futures a reality and on Thursday afternoon, the New York Liberty took part in the organization's 55-year-long storied tradition for its 2018 season tip-off event.
Abbott House in Irvington, NY, which was founded in 1963, is rooted in a history of social service and social justice. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. provided the invocation at the organization's inaugural dinner in 1965, and its mission has remained to provide durable foundations and promising futures to humans with the most complex needs.
The historic organization invited members of the team and coaching staff, along with members of the front office on a full tour of the facility which was followed by classroom visits and a co-ed basketball clinic for approximately 50 youth.
Kiah Stokes stated. "For us to come here and have the opportunity to help countless kids and hear the praise they gave us brings a smile to my face."
The Liberty visited classrooms and were able to hear of the students' stories and view some of their expressive artwork. The group also indulged in some dance battles as competitive preparation for the pick-up games and basketball instruction that awaited them.
This was the first team community event of the season for the Liberty, who last season were recognized by the WNBA by receiving the first-ever Season-Long Community Assist Award, highlighting the organization's sustained efforts towards making a positive impact in their community.
Stokes ended. "To have the opportunity to give back is incredible and we're tremendously grateful for it."
New York opens its season Sunday, May 20, against the Chicago Sky at Wintrust Arena at 7 p.m. For the 2018 home opener at Westchester County Center, the Liberty welcome the defending champion Minnesota Lynx on Friday, May 25, at 7:30 p.m.
