Calgary Stampeders News Release
The Calgary Stampeders are pleased to announce that import receivers Nik Lewis and Titus Ryan have been honoured by the Canadian Football League for their efforts in Week 9. Lewis was named offensive player of the week while Ryan received the special teams player of the week nod.
Lewis turned in an impressive performance this past Friday against the Toronto Argonauts. He had five catches for 118 yards including a 52-yard catch, his longest of 2009. The six-year CFL veteran was also a key contributor in the Stamps blocking game which helped pave the way for 146 rushing yards on the night. Lewis also added to his team record as he caught a pass in a 95th consecutive game in which he has played.
Ryan combined for 182 return yards to provide excellent field position for the Stamps. The speedy returner had four kickoff returns for 110 yards including a 40-yard return to open the contest. He also added eight punt returns for 72 yards. Ryan leads all kickoff returners (minimum of 10 returns) with a 25.4 yards-per-return average and has recorded the only kickoff return for touchdown this season.
Stamps linebackers Shannon James and Malik Jackson were runners-up for the defensive player of the week honours in Week 9 while offensive lineman Dimitri Tsoumpas was runner-up for Canadian player of the week.
Lewis and Ryan were the third and fourth Stampeders players to be recognized this season as part of the CFL's weekly awards. In Week 7, receiver Jeremaine Copeland was named the offensive player of the week and in Week 3, linebacker Dwaine Carpenter was named the defensive player of the week. The Stampeders had nine players receive player-of-the-week recognition in 2008.
The next home game for the Stamps is the Labour Day Classic on Sept. 7 against the Edmonton Eskimos. Kickoff at McMahon Stadium is at 5:30 p.m. Limited tickets are still available through local Safeway and SportChek locations and fans hoping to attend the game are encouraged to get their tickets before the game is sold out.
