New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, N.J. - James Leverton fired eight shutout innings and the Jackals offense pounded out 16 hits as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the New York Federals 10-0 on Tuesday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Leverton (3-2) needed just 86 pitches to cruise to his third win of the season, allowing five hits and striking out six batters while walking one. Jeremy Hunt, who signed with the Jackals earlier in the day, made his New Jersey debut in the ninth and retired the side in order to seal the victory.

The Jackals struck Federals' starter James Kukucka early, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. After Argenis Reyes led off with a single to right and advanced all the way to third on a Mike DeJesus sacrifice bunt, a Leonard Davis RBI double made it 1-0. Two batters later, Mike Jones singled to give the Jackals a 2-0 advantage.

Following the Jones single, Kukucka retired 10 straight batters before the Jackals used three straight singles to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, Kukucka limited the damage as New Jersey mustered just one run in the frame to gain a 3-0 edge. The Jackals extended their lead to 4-0 in the sixth on a Nick Giarraputo RBI single following a hustle double by Myron Leslie.

The Jackals blew the game open in the seventh, plating five runs against Federals' reliever Dean Lysenko to open up a 9-0 advantage. The runs came across on a hit-and-run RBI single off the bat of Mike DeJesus with Chris White in motion, a Mike Jones two-run single, and a two-run homer to right by Jeremy Slayden.

A Leslie eighth-inning RBI single capped the scoring.

Kukucka (1-1) took the loss after surrendering four runs on eight hits over six innings.

Offensively, six different Jackals contributed multiple hits as Giarraputo led the charge with a 3-for-4 night at the plate.

The Jackals and Federals play the fourth contest of their five-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends southpaw Ryan Kulik (1-0, 6.28 ERA) to the mound against New York right-hander Mike Petrowski (1-1, 1.91 ERA). Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live Jackals webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com
