Newark Bears News Release

TNEWARK, N.J. (June 21, 2011) - Nick Salotti had three hits and three RBI and Alex Trezza had three hits, including a double and a homer, and two RBI, as the Worcester Tornadoes capitalized on six Newark Bears errors en route to a 10-4 victory Tuesday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

The Bears fell to 15-10 with the loss, while the Tornadoes improved to 9-15.

Not only did Newark commit a season-high six errors, but they also were struck out 15 times by four different Worcester pitchers.

Worcester jumped all over Bears starter and loser Alex Smith (3-1) for five runs in the top of the first inning, but only one of the runs was earned, as the Bears committed three errors in the inning. Alex Nunez led off the game and reached on an error. Chris Colabello then delivered a one-out double, followed by a walk to Mark Minicozzi.

Salotti then drove in two runs with a single and Trezza added another run with a single. The Tornadoes scored their final two runs of the inning on the Bears' third miscue of the frame.

Worcester increased the lead to 6-0 in the third inning on Trezza's solo homer and pushed it to 8-0 in the fourth on RBI singles from Minicozzi and Salotti.

The Bears then scored one run in the fifth on a bases loaded walk from Danny Santiesteban, scoring Juan Martinez, who had singled.

In that inning, the Bears sent starting pitcher Ryan Bicandoa to an early shower, knocking him out after just 4 2/3 innings, after he had fanned nine during the stretch, but Bicandoa could not get the victory. Sean Keeler (1-0) got the final out in the fifth and pitched the sixth to earn the win for the Tornadoes.

The Bears added two more runs in the sixth inning on a throwing error that scored Eric McGee and an infield out by Kyle LaMotta that scored Todd Gosssage. Both McGee and Gossage had singled in the inning, a frame that saw the Bears cut the lead to 8-3.

But Worcester scored twice more in the seventh, with another Bear error playing a part in the run and the other came home on an RBI single from Alex Nunez.

Brandon Watson and LaMotta paced the Bears with two hits each.

The Bears and Tornadoes continue their four-game series with a 7:05 p.m. start at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Jesse Estrada is slated to make the start for Newark.
