Let the Battle of Alberta Begin

Edmonton Elks News Release

The Eskimos (1-5) head to the foothills Sunday to begin their trek back up the mountain as they face the CFL West Division leading Calgary Stampeders (5-1).

Edmonton is coming off Friday's disappointing and costly 29-28 loss at home to Toronto. Not only did the Esks miss out on a much needed two points, but they lost Fred Stamps, the CFL's second leading receiver, to a shoulder injury that will sideline him for at least the next couple of weeks.

Despite being "Stamps-less" against the Stamps, Edmonton will have to solve it's penchant for slow starts. Last week the Esks did not have an offensive play over 20 yards in the first half. Running back Arkee Whitlock has two consecutive 100+ yds rushing games and has clearly benefited from a more consistent and more aggressive run block.

To date no opposing quarterback has passed for 300+ yds against Edmonton but they'll face a stiff challenge against Calgary's Henry Burris who leads the league in both TD passes (13) and interceptions (9), and receivers Nik Lewis and Romby Bryant.

It's the first regular season meeting between the Alberta foes, and the first of three get togethers in less than a month. Edmonton is 1-6 in their last seven trips to McMahon Stadium, but has a winning record overall (54-46-2) in Calgary. The Esks hope to have that "historical good fortune" working in their favour again.

The Eskimos head into their bye-week for seven days of rest. They return to action on Saturday, August 28th as they play host to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Kickoff is at 5:00pm.
