Vermont Mountaineers News Release
KEENE, N.H. - Backed by an outstanding starting pitching performance by righthander Sean Leland (Orland Park, Ill. / Louisville), the Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Keene Swamp Bats, 3-0, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Alumni Field on Tuesday night. With the shutout, the Mountaineers have now held the Swamp Bats scoreless for 21 consecutive innings, dating back to the sixth inning of a game the two sides played on July 11.
With the win, Vermont improves to a Northern Division leading 20-13 and has now won five straight. Keene falls to 8-24.
Leland was brilliant, tossing eight and one-third scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and two walks as he improved to 2-0 on the summer.
Mountaineers' rightfielder Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) led off the game with a solo blast to right-center field to give Vermont an immediate 1-0 lead, one the team held onto the rest of the way.
Vermont tacked a run on in the fourth, when first baseman Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) singled. He advanced to second on a wild pitch before moving to third on a groundout to the right side. With two outs and shortstop Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) at bat, Dudek crossed home following another wild pitch to put the Mountaineers up 2-0.
In the top of the ninth, catcher Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla. / Maine Orono) cracked a solo shot to deep right-center to provide Vermont with a 3-0 edge.
Keene starter Lincoln Henzman (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville) took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season. Henzman dealt five innings, giving up two runs (both earned) on four hits and one walk. He struck out six.
Closer Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan) came on to record the final two outs of the ninth to pick up his eighth save of the summer. He induced a game-ending double play from the first batter he faced.
The Mountaineers return to action on Wednesday night, when the team returns home to host the North Adams SteepleCats for a 6:30 p.m. meeting at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
