The Swamp Bats were blanked at home against the Mountaineers for the second straight game as Vermont's three runs were enough for the victory on the back of starting pitcher Sean Leland.
Vermont started off the game with a bang, as leadoff batter Jack Parenty hit a solo homerun over the right field fence at Alumni Field to give Vermont a 1-0 lead with the first batter of the game.
The Swamp Bats had been held scoreless in 14 consecutive innings coming into play Tuesday night, and it was extended to 23 innings in a row.
The Mountaineers scored again in the top of the fourth when Joe Dudek trotted home on a wild pitch thrown by Keene starting pitcher Lincoln Henzman and the score was 2-0.
Henzman lasted five innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out six Vermont batters.
In the top of the ninth inning Kevin Stypulkowski added to the lead with a solo homerun to give Vermont a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.The story of the game was Vermont's starting pitcher Sean Leland. Leland threw 8.1 shutout innings, while allowing only two hits and also having two errors committed defensively behind him.
The Swamp Bats were able to bring the tying run up to bat in the bottom of the ninth before Sam Delaplane would come on to get the final two outs of the game on a double play and recorded the save for his eighth of the season and Vermont went home with a 3-0 victory.
Vermont improved to 3-2 against Keene this season and extended their lead atop the Northern Division with a record of 20-13.
The Swamp Bats fall to 8-24 on the season. Keene's back in action Wednesday night as they travel to Danbury for a 6:30 start.
