Lexington Legends News Release
(Lexington, Ky.): Zach Johnson's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning gave the Lexington Legends a 4-3 win over Hagerstown Friday night.
Starting pitchers Nick Tropeano of Lexington and Alex Meyer of Hagerstown, a former University of Kentucky star, were locked in a scoreless duel until the sixth when Lexington broke through with three runs. With one out, Matt Duffy walked, stole second and moved to third on a single by Drew Muren. Brandon Meredith singled to left field, scoring Duffy. John Hinson grounded into a force out at second as Muren took third. Roberto Pena then capped the inning with a double to left-center, plating Muren and Hinson and giving the Legends a 3-0.
The Suns answered quickly. Jason Martinson led off the top of the seventh inning with his fifth home run of the season. After a walk to Matt Skole and a strikeout, J.P. Ramirez homered to right to tie the game at 3-3.
The Legends walked off with the win in the ninth. With one out, Delino DeShields Jr. singled. With Jordan Scott at the plate, DeShields moved to second on a passed ball. After Scott walked, DeShields stole third base, his South Atlantic League-leading 20th steal of the season. Johnson followed with a fly to center, scoring DeShields with the winning run.
Carlos Quevedo (1-1), who entered the game in the seventh inning, got the win. Aaron Barrett (2-1) was the losing pitcher.
Tropeano carried a no-hitter into the sixth. He threw six and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs while striking out six.
Meyer worked six innings for Hagerstown. He allowed three runs and struck out five batters.
Johnson's sacrifice fly gave him 35 runs batted in for the season, moving him into the league lead, one ahead of Hagerstown's Matt Skole.
The two teams will square off in game three of the four game series Saturday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
