
Lee and the Cards Blank the Travs, 5-0

Springfield, MO - RHP Thomas Lee, RHP Corey Baker and RHP Chris Thomas combined to shut out the Arkansas Travelers as the Springfield Cardinals took the series opener, 5-0, before 3,422 fans at Hammons Field on Thursday night. The shutout win is the Cardinals first of the 2015 season, with Lee notching his first Double-A victory.
Lee (W, 1-2) kept the Travelers (8-5) bats at bay through his first three scoreless stanzas, before the Cardinals (5-8) broke through against RHP Alan Busenitz (L, 1-1) in the bottom of the third. SS Aledmys Diaz sparked the offense with a leadoff single through the middle, before LF Anthony Garcia worked a walk. Diaz advanced to third on a steal before Garcia moved to second on a groundout, putting runners at second and third with one down for CF Charlie Tilson. Tilson attacked the first pitch, ripping a two-run single to center field to bring in both runners for the 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals quickly padded the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. 1B David Washington worked a walk to start the inning, before trotting home on a towering two-run home run from DH Jonathan Rodriguez, his second blast of the year, making it 4-0. 2B Breyvic Valera followed the homer with a single and quickly took second on a pitch in the dirt. Diaz promptly brought in Valera with an RBI single to center field, stretching the lead to 5-0.
Lee continued to dominate, notching four more strikeouts through his final three innings on the mound. The right-hander finished with seven scoreless innings of work, striking out six while allowing six hits and not walking a single batter. RHP Corey Baker picked up right where Lee left off, dealing a scoreless eighth frame. RHP Chris Thomas put the finishing touch on the shutout, blanking the Travelers in the ninth to close the Cardinals 5-0 win.
