Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - The Arkansas Travelers evened the series against the Springfield Cardinals with a 12-5 win before 4,156 fans at Hammons Field on Friday night.
After Cardinals LHP Kyle Hald (L, 0-1) and Travelers RHP Austin Wood (W, 3-0) navigated through a pair of scoreless innings apiece, Arkansas (9-5) cracked the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning. C Zach Wright started the inning with a walk, before taking second on a single from 2B Drew Maggi. SS Sherman Johnson then grounded the ball to first base, but 1B Jonathan Rodriguez misfired a throw past second for an error, enabling Wright to come all the way home, Maggi to make it to third and Johnson to pull into second. After a walk from CF Chad Hinshaw, RF Cal Towey ripped an RBI single to right field, plating one run and advancing everyone ninety feet. 3B Brian Hernandez followed next with an RBI single to center field that would have only brought in one run, but was bobbled by CF Charlie Tilson, resulting in a second run scoring on the play. With runners at the corners, former Springfield Cardinal, DH Charlie Cutler, plated the fifth run of the rally with a double play ball, stretching the lead to 5-0.
The Cardinals (5-9), though, started chipping away immediately against Wood in the bottom of the third. C Michael Ohlman led off with a sharp single to the left side, followed quickly by a mammoth two-run home run from 3B Patrick Wisdom. The third baseman's first blast of the year cut the deficit to just 5-2.
LHP Jonathan Cornelius took over on the mound to start the fourth and logged 3.2 scoreless innings, keeping the Cardinals within striking distance.
However, the Travelers rallied for seven runs in the top of the eighth inning, stretching the lead. With one run in and the bases loaded, a pair of RBI walks from Johnson and Hinshaw plated the second and third runs of the inning. Towey then placed a bases-clearing, three-run double into the left field corner, increasing the advantage to nine runs. An RBI base hit by DH Michael Snyder drove in the final run of the inning and padded the advantage to 12-2.
The Cardinals refused to go down quietly, striking in the bottom of the ninth inning. With one down, Wisdom continued a perfect night at the plate with a walk. He ended up 2-for-2, with a double and two free passes to go with his homer. CF Charlie Tilson followed the Wisdom walk with a single, before a pop out retired the frame's second out. 2B Jacob Wilson then launched a three-run home run to left field, pelting the ball off the St. Louis Cardinals Manual Scoreboard beyond the fence and swinging the Cardinals three runs closer. However, Travelers RHP Nate Hyatt found the final out with no further damage being done, closing the Travelers 12-5 win.
