Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Sarasota, FL) - Sam Lecure dealt six shutout innings in which he allowed only one hit to help the Sarasota Reds to a 6-2 win over the Vero Beach Dodgers Wednesday night at Ed Smith Stadium. The Dodgers avoided their fifth shutout of the year with two runs in the ninth. Marland Williams drove in three runs for the Reds. The series continues Thursday night at 7:00 PM.
Sarasota took an early lead in the second inning. Cody Strait singled off Dodgers starter Adam Thomas (2-3) and John Purdom reached on an error with two outs. J.D. Roberts then drew a walk to load the bases, which Williams cleared with a double.
Thomas then settled down, retiring 11 of the next 13 hitters. He left after six innings and Sarasota jumped on struggling reliever Julio Pimentel. Williams led off with an infield hit and stole second. He scored on Tonys Gutierrez's base hit. Jay Garthwaite then doubled with two outs and Strait followed with a double of his own to score both baserunners and open up a 6-0 lead.
The Dodgers tallied only one hit off Lecure, who helped the Texas Longhorns reach the College World Series in 2004. That hit was courtey of Jamie Hoffmann, who had a leadoff single in the third. Lecure issued four walks, but set down his final 10 batters.
Vero Beach finally got on the board in the ninth. David Nicholson singled with one out and pinch-hitter Sergio Pedroza doubled him home. Xavier Paul doubled in Pedroza for the 6-2 final.
