League Leading Drakkar Shut Down Eagles at the Nest
November 25, 2023 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release
NOTES FROM THE GAME
- Louis-Charles Plourde's goal in the opening five minutes proved to be the winner as the Baie-Comeau Drakkar skated to a 4-0 victory over the Eagles at Centre 200. The result stretched the winning streak of the league leading Drakkar to seven games, while snapping the Eagles win streak of two games.
- Julien Paillé, Félix Gagnon, and Isaac Dufort also scored in the win for Baie-Comeau.
- Olivier Ciarlo stopped all 20 Eagles shots in recording the shutout, while Jakub Milota stopped 27 of 31 shots in the loss.
- Baie-Comeau defenseman Émile Chouinard was given a five minute major and a game misconduct for a check to the head on Lubos Stahon in the second period. After being helped off the ice, Stahon would return to action later in the period and remained in the game.
- The game marked the debut of the Cape Breton Eagles' new alternate gold uniforms.
Plourde's goal on a one timer was the only one in the opening period as chances were hard to come by, with Baie-Comeau outshooting the Eagles 10-6. Before the halfway mark of regulation, the Eagles did have an opportunity with some open space on the ice as with the teams playing four on four, Anthony Lavoie was sent off for a minor so the Eagles had a brief four on three advantage.
The Drakkar killed off the four on three, and when play returned to five on four Paillé finished a pass from Matyas Melovsky short handed to stretch the lead to 2-0. The Eagles power play wasn't able to create much. more later in the period during the five minute penalty to Chouinard that put Baie-Comeau down to five defensemen for the balance of the game.
Baie-Comeau was able to cash in on their own power play in the third period- just seven seconds into an Antoine Roy minor, Melovsky fed the puck to Gagnon in the crease, and his tip in made it 3-0. Dufort finished off a passing play later in the period to give the Drakkar their fourth and final goal.
The Eagles will play their final game of the home stand, and final game of the month of November, Wednesday night against the Washington draft pick Antoine Keller and the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Puck drop is at 7 PM. Tickets can be purchased at https://shorturl.at/tEFMO
